On Monday, Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri directed that cough syrups should not be sold in any medical store without a doctor's prescription. Through the Civil Surgeon, all doctors have also been instructed to prescribe cough syrup only to children in the age group where there is no risk of any adverse effects. The district administration has also clarified that strict action will be taken against medical stores or doctors violating these guidelines. Additionally, samples of various brands available in the market will be tested through the Civil Surgeon to verify the quality and safety of cough syrups. The district administration has appealed to parents not to give any cough syrup to children without a doctor's advice.
