Registration of pet shops will be mandatory in Delhi, instructions to implement dog census and monitoring system soon

New Delhi: A meeting of the Delhi Animal Welfare Board was held at the Delhi Secretariat on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Development Minister Kapil Mishra. In the meeting, it was decided to make registration of pet shops mandatory in Delhi and to form a special monitoring committee for this. Minister Kapil directed to implement the dog census and monitoring system soon.

Development Commissioner Shurbir Singh along with senior officials of Animal Husbandry Department, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) and other related departments were present in this meeting. The objective of the meeting was to consider various issues related to animal welfare and prepare a concrete action plan for the state of Delhi.

An important agenda of the meeting was also related to administrative and financial matters. In this, a proposal was made to transfer funds from the Delhi Advisory Board for Animal Welfare to the Delhi Animal Welfare Board. Also, to run the activities of the board smoothly, consensus was reached on the formation of a standing committee and other sub-committees, recruitment of new staff and approval of expenditure on various initiatives of the board.

Minister Kapil Mishra said that to promote animal welfare, it was decided to run awareness programs at the school level with the cooperation of the Education Department. Apart from this, consensus was also reached on allowing the members of the board to participate in national and international level conferences and training programs. It was also decided in the meeting that an Animal Market Monitoring Committee would soon be formed in Delhi so that the activities of animal markets can be monitored.

Minister Kapil Mishra, while addressing the meeting, said that the Animal Welfare Board meeting was not held for many years during the previous government. Today this meeting is being held regarding all the demands of the board. Whatever problems are there related to animals in Delhi will be resolved soon. Adequate funds are being made available to the board so that work can be done rapidly towards the welfare of animals. Also, animal welfare committees will be formed at the level of every district. Before World Rabies Day, a detailed state action plan related to rabies control will be prepared and presented.

He said that the Delhi government will soon make the process of registration of pet shops mandatory and a separate monitoring committee is being formed for this. All shops will have to be registered as per the rules and monitoring will be ensured.

Kapil Mishra also said that if financial support is required at any level, the Delhi government will provide it on priority. He directed the officials to prepare a detailed advisory soon in which clear guidelines should be given on registration of pet shops, rabies control, microchipping of dogs, prevention of dog bites and the role of monitoring committees. Also, social media should be made more active so that both awareness and participation can be increased.
