Not implementing PESA Act is an insult to tribal rights: Nayak

Jharkhand/Ranchi: Vijay Shankar Nayak, Central Vice President of Adivasi Moolvasi Janadhikar Manch in Jharkhand, has accused the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and the current Hemant Soren government of deliberately delaying the implementation of the Panchayat Provisions Scheduled Areas Extension Act-1996 (PESA Act 1996).

Vijay Shankar Nayak said through a press release issued on Wednesday that in Jharkhand, priority is being given to the looting of tribal resources to promote corporate interests. He said that not implementing the PESA Act by the state government is not only a contempt of the High Court, but also an insult to the culture, tradition and rights of the tribal society.

He said that the High Court's decision to stop the auction of sand ghats is welcome, but raises serious questions on the intentions of the government. He warned that the tribal society will not sit silent anymore and will fight for its rights from the streets to every platform.

Nayak, while demanding from the Chief Justice of High Court to send the departmental officers who violated the order to jail, said that when the corrupt officers and officials go to jail, only then the government will be forced to implement PESA Act.
