Landslides in Himachal Pradesh close 3 national highways and 583 roads, yellow alert till September 14

Himachal Pradesh/Shimla: Due to the monsoon activity in Himachal Pradesh, it is raining intermittently at some places on Friday. The capital Shimla is covered with thick fog amidst the clouds. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain with thunder in many districts till September 14. Roads are blocked due to landslides at many places in the state.

According to the State Emergency Operations Center, till Friday morning, three national highways (NH) and a total of 583 roads remained closed in the state. These include NH-03 and NH-305 and 204 roads in Kullu district, 156 in Mandi, 57 in Shimla, 44 in Kangra, 35 in Chamba and NH-503A and 19 other roads in Una.

Due to heavy rains, electricity and drinking water schemes have also come to a halt at many places. 806 electricity transformers and 364 drinking water schemes have been affected in the state. Out of these, the maximum 539 transformers are closed in Kullu, 206 in Mandi and 20 each in Shimla and Solan, while among drinking water schemes, 176 in Kangra, 91 in Shimla and 51 in Mandi have been affected.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain with thunder for three consecutive days in the state. According to the forecast, a warning of thunderstorm and lightning has been issued in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Shimla and Sirmaur districts on September 12. On September 13, a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts on September 14. There are chances of light to moderate rain in the state from September 15 to 18, but no alert has been issued for these days. From last night to this morning, the highest rainfall of 75 mm was recorded in Murari Devi, 61 mm in Mandi and 52 mm in Sundarnagar.

It is noteworthy that this monsoon season has caused heavy devastation in the state. So far 380 people have died and 40 people are missing, while 447 people have been injured. At the district level, the highest number of 61 deaths have been recorded in Mandi district. Apart from this, houses, shops and cow shelters have also suffered extensive damage.

So far 1,280 houses have completely collapsed in the state and 5,469 have been partially damaged. 480 shops and 5,762 cowsheds have also been destroyed. Livestock has also suffered heavy losses. According to government figures, 1,983 animals and more than 26 thousand poultry birds have died.

According to preliminary assessment, so far the state has suffered a loss of public property worth Rs 4,313 crore. During this period, 137 landslides, 97 flash floods and 45 cloudburst incidents have been recorded in the state.
