Notice to seven District Magistrates regarding the disappearing ponds in Bundelkhand


The High Court sought personal affidavit, give information after surveying for 20 years

Prayagraj: Taking the case of disappearance of ponds from Bundelkhand region seriously, the Allahabad High Court has issued notice to the District Magistrates of seven districts of the region. The court has asked the District Magistrates of Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Hamirpur and Jalaun to file personal affidavits and give information.

The court said that a survey of 20 years from 1359 Fasli should be conducted and it should be told how many ponds are present and how many are missing. Also tell what is the reason for the disappearance of ponds. This order was given by Justice JJ Munir on Friday on a suo motu PIL.

While hearing a PIL, the court found in a report that about 4250 ponds are missing in Bundelkhand. The court took suo motu cognizance of the report and ordered to register a PIL. Along with this, advocate Pradeep Kumar Singh and SC Verma were appointed as amicus curiae.

On Friday, advocate Pradeep Kumar Singh told the court that in Mau tehsil of Chitrakoot district, Ramakol village, ponds and Bhita land were allotted to people in consolidation. Due to this, ponds disappeared in a large number of villages. He requested the court to seek separate information about the ponds built under Jal Jeevan Mission and MNREGA.

The court issued notice to the DM of seven districts and ordered to survey the rural areas of the district and submit detailed information of the missing and existing ponds along with personal affidavit. The court has fixed the next date as 17 September.
