Major Police Action Within 18 Hours: Illegal Arms Trafficking Racket Busted, Five Arrested in Ranchi

Ranchi | January 11, 2026:
In a swift and decisive operation completed within 18 hours, Ranchi Police busted an organized gang involved in illegal arms trading and arrested five accused from different police station areas of the city. During the operation, police recovered pistols, country-made firearms, a revolver, and a total of 110 live cartridges, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime.

According to police sources, on the night of January 10, 2026, around 10:00 PM, the Senior Superintendent of Police received confidential information that criminals were planning illegal sale and purchase of firearms in the Badi Masjid Lane Road under Hindpiri Police Station area. Acting promptly on the input, a special raiding team was constituted under the supervision of the City SP, led by the Deputy Superintendents of Police of Kotwali and Sadar.

At around 11:20 PM, when the police team reached near Badi Masjid, one suspect attempted to flee on seeing the police. He was chased and apprehended. During interrogation, he identified himself as Md. Kabir alias Bablu alias Bona (38 years), a resident of Hindpiri. On personal search, police recovered a 9 mm pistol from his waist along with two magazines loaded with 20 live rounds. As he failed to produce any valid license or documents, he was immediately arrested.

During sustained interrogation, Md. Kabir revealed that he was part of an arms supply network that procured illegal weapons from Kaimur and Munger districts of Bihar and supplied them to criminals in Ranchi. Based on his disclosure, police conducted coordinated raids in multiple locations.

From the Pundag Police Station area, police arrested Shahnawaz Alam and Ankit Kumar, recovering a factory-made pistol, a country-made firearm, and live cartridges. From the Sadar Police Station area, Md. Saif alias Shera was arrested with two country-made pistols and live ammunition. Another accused, Anuj Thakur, was arrested from the Sukhdevnagar Police Station area, from whose residence a six-chamber country-made revolver and a large cache of live cartridges were seized.

Police stated that all the arrested accused have a criminal background and were actively involved in illegal arms trafficking for a long period. Cases have been registered against all of them under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code, and further legal action is underway.

Senior police officials described the operation as a major success in curbing illegal arms supply in the city. They emphasized that Ranchi Police will continue to take strict action against organized crime and illegal arms networks.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of officers and personnel from Kotwali, Sadar, Hindpiri, and Sukhdevnagar police stations, along with the technical branch and armed forces.
