'Decisive Initiative' for Harmu River Conservation: RMC Launches War-Footing Cleaning Campaign

Administrator Sushant Gaurav Conducts On-Site Inspection Ahead of Swachh Survekshan 2025-26; Strict Penal Action Against Polluters

Ranchi: Taking a significant and decisive step towards revitalizing the city's water bodies, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) launched a special cleaning drive on a war footing in the Harmu River today, January 03, 2026. This campaign is crucial for meeting the standards of water body cleanliness under the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2025-26.

War-Footing Cleaning Operations

RMC Administrator Sushant Gaurav personally visited the site to inspect the cleaning work, which spanned from Harmu Muktidham to the Kadru Radisson Blu area. Over 100 Safai Mitras (Sanitation Workers) participated in the comprehensive operation. Solid waste, plastic, silt, and other debris accumulated in the river for years were removed using a combination of machinery and human resources.

Strict Directives Issued

During the inspection, the Administrator issued clear instructions to the officials:

 * Strict penal action must be taken under the Jharkhand Municipal Act against those who dispose of solid or liquid waste into the Harmu River.

 * A continuous and intensive campaign should be launched against illegal encroachments and illegal cattle sheds identified along the riverbanks.

Key Guidelines for Long-Term Conservation:

 * War-footing utilization of all RMC resources to remove accumulated silt and waste.

 * Complete cleaning, grass cutting, and attractive painting of the riparian zones.

 * Intensive plantation along the river walls and embankment strips.

 * Adoption of a zero-tolerance policy against those polluting the river, ensuring continuous cleaning efforts.

Appeal for Citizen Participation

Administrator Gaurav stated that the Harmu River is a critical lifeline for Ranchi city, and its conservation cannot be achieved solely through administrative efforts. He emphasized the need for active participation from citizens, social organizations, and public representatives. He appealed to the residents to refrain from dumping any kind of garbage, sewage, or waste into the river and to cooperate with the Municipal Corporation in the conservation effort.

Senior RMC officials, including Additional Administrator Sanjay Kumar, Deputy Administrators Ravindra Kumar and Gautam Prasad Sahu, along with staff from the Sanitation, Engineering, and other departments, were present. They ensured continuous monitoring of the campaign and resolved to continue regular cleaning and surveillance in the future.
