Under the directions of the Hon'ble JHALSA (Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority) and the guidance of the Hon'ble Chairman-cum-Principal District and Sessions Judge, Ranchi, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ranchi, organized a legal awareness program against child marriage at the Kuchu Panchayat Bhavan in the Ormanjhi block area. This program was conducted as part of the 100-day action plan under the 'Asha' Campaign run by NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) for the prevention of child marriage.
Focus on The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006
Rajesh Kumar Sinha, LADC (Legal Aid Defense Counsel), addressed the attendees and stated that the main objective of the awareness drive is to make the society free from child marriage. He informed that the 'Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006' is in force in India to curb the practice.
Shri Sinha highlighted the provisions of the Act:
* The minimum legal age for marriage is fixed at 21 years for a male and 18 years for a female.
* Any marriage conducted below these ages is a punishable offense under the law.
* Under the Act, any person—including parents, guardians, relatives, Panchayat members, priests, Maulvis, or any other individual—who performs, aids, or encourages a child marriage is considered a legal offender.
* The penalty for such an offense includes imprisonment up to two years and a fine up to one lakh rupees.
Emphasis on Drug De-addiction
During the event, Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, PLV (Para Legal Volunteer), focused on the NALSA-operated 'DAWN' Scheme and delivered a message on drug de-addiction. He stated that addiction results in the loss of body, mind, and wealth. He urged the youth not to use drugs but instead focus on securing their future.
The event saw the presence of LADC Rajesh Kumar Sinha, PLVs Santosh Kumar, Ashish Baitha, Ramjeet Mahto, Rani Thakur, Kiran Kumari, Deepak Ganju, Sheila Tigga, and Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, among others.
