Caring for elderly parents is not only a moral duty but also a legal responsibility; complaints may lead to jail and fine: DLSA Secretary

Awareness programme organized on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007

Lohardaga, November 17

As per the directives of JHALSA, Ranchi, and under the guidance of PDJ-cum-Chairman DLSA, Mr. Rajkamal Mishra, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Lohardaga, organized an awareness programme at the Sadar Block hall on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

DLSA Secretary, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, stated that the purpose of this Act is to ensure maintenance, healthcare services, and the protection of property for senior citizens. He said such awareness programmes help educate the public about the law and ensure that the rights of parents and senior citizens are protected.

He added:

“Every individual has the right to live with dignity. Through the law, you can secure your rights. While the government is providing several welfare schemes, it is the duty of children to care for their parents responsibly and sincerely.”

He also elaborated on the services and activities carried out by DLSA.

Sadar Block BDO Mr. Thakur Gauri Shankar Sharma said that every person has the right to live with respect. Parents spend their whole lives for the welfare of their children, yet some children fail to respect and care for them. To address this issue, the government has enacted the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which offers legal protection.

He emphasized that people must be aware of the various welfare schemes implemented by the government to benefit them.

Resource Person & Assistant LADCS, Ms. Indrani Kujur, informed that if any senior citizen faces harassment or neglect, they can approach the court to secure their rights.

She explained that— Section 5 of the Act allows parents and senior citizens to claim maintenance from their children or legal heirs who have sufficient means.

They can file such cases themselves or through someone else in the SDO court.

Circle Officer, Mr. Ramnarayan Khalkho, said that the pension provided by the government is meant for personal expenses, but children should still take full responsibility for their parents’ well-being. He advised the elderly to stay aware of their rights and to instill good values in younger generations so they grow up to be responsible individuals.

During the programme, on-the-spot resolutions were provided for several elderly pension-related issues.
