West Singhbhum: The administration has shown strictness regarding tobacco control in Chakradharpur, located in West Singhbhum district. On Friday, on the orders of SDM Shruti Rajlaxmi, a special investigation campaign was conducted under the direction of Block Development Officer Kanchan Mukherjee and under the leadership of Police Station Incharge Chakradharpur. This campaign was conducted from Asantalia area to Chakradharpur Block Office area.
During this, action was taken under Section 4, 6A and 6B of the Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)-2003. Especially, illegal sale of tobacco, gutkha and khaini was investigated within a radius of 100 meters of educational institutions. A total of 11 shops were inspected, out of which 3 shopkeepers were found violating the law. A total fine of Rs 1800 was collected from them.
During the campaign, District Advisor Mukti Birua of District Tobacco Control Unit, West Singhbhum said that selling, using or spitting tobacco products within 100 meters of schools, government offices, hospitals and court premises is prohibited. If found doing so, a fine of up to Rs 1000 can be imposed.
During the action, shopkeepers were informed about the COTPA Act 2003 and the ill effects of tobacco consumption. They were also strictly warned to refrain from such sales in future.
District Advisor Mukti Birua, social worker Anup Bagay and Chakradharpur police station police force played an active role in this campaign.
The administration has clarified that such campaigns will be run regularly in future as well.
