Jharkhand High Court to Get New Chief Justice, Justice M.S. Sonak Recommended

The Jharkhand High Court is set to get a new Chief Justice soon. The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice M.S. Sonak for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. The current Chief Justice, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, is scheduled to retire on January 8, 2026, after which Justice Sonak is expected to assume charge.

Justice M.S. Sonak was born on November 28, 1964. He completed his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Panaji, Goa. He later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Dhempe College of Arts and Science and completed his LL.B. in First Class from M.S. College of Law, Panaji, which is affiliated with Bombay University. He also holds a diploma in the Portuguese language awarded by the Xavier Centre of Historical Research.

Justice Sonak was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in October 1988. He practiced extensively before the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court, handling cases related to civil and constitutional law, labour and service law, environmental law, commercial and tax law, company law, and public interest litigations. During his legal career, he represented the Union Government as an Additional Standing Counsel, served as Special Counsel for the State Government, and appeared for various statutory corporations.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013. Considering his long judicial experience and expertise across diverse areas of law, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended him for appointment as the new Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
