Former Minister Enos Ekka Suffers Setback, High Court Rejects Plea to Stay Seven-Year Sentence

Ranchi |

Former minister Enos Ekka has suffered a major setback from the Jharkhand High Court. The court has rejected his petition seeking a stay on the seven-year sentence awarded by a special CBI court. On Thursday, the bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar pronounced the order after completing the hearing in the matter.

It may be recalled that a special CBI court in Ranchi had convicted Enos Ekka for misusing his official position and purchasing land by providing a false address, and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment. Challenging this order, Ekka had approached the High Court seeking a stay on the sentence. After concluding the hearing earlier, the High Court had reserved its verdict, which was delivered on Thursday.

During the hearing, counsel for Enos Ekka argued that he had already been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50 lakh in a disproportionate assets case, a sentence which he has already served. It was further contended that the present case related to misuse of office was connected to the same set of circumstances, and therefore the sentence in this case should be stayed.

However, the court did not accept these arguments and dismissed the petition. With the High Court’s decision, former minister Enos Ekka has received a significant legal setback.
