AFSPA to continue for six more months in Manipur, parts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to also be included

New Delhi:The central government has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for six months in various districts and police stations across three northeastern states. Under a notification issued on Friday, all of Manipur, except for 13 police stations in five districts, nine districts and 21 police stations in Nagaland, and three districts and three police stations in Arunachal Pradesh have been declared "disturbed."

It is noteworthy that AFSPA grants certain special powers to the armed police forces to expedite the situation in disturbed areas. Under this, the forces are also protected from prosecution without central government permission.

Three separate notifications were issued by the Home Ministry in this regard. As per the notification, AFSPA will be applicable in all of Manipur except Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Patsoi, Wangoi in Imphal West; Porompat, Heingang, Irilbung in Imphal East; Thouwal in Thoubal; Vishnupur, Nambol in Vishnupur; and Kakching police station in Kakching.

Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts in the state of Nagaland; Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza, and Kezocha police stations in Kohima district; Mangkolenba, Mokokchung-1, Logyo, Tuli, Longchem, and Anaki 'C' police stations in Mokokchung district. AFSPA will remain in force in the Yanglok Police Station in Longleng district, Bhandari, Champang and Ralan Police Stations in Bokha district, and Ghatasi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto and Aghunato Police Stations in Zunheboto district.

AFSPA will remain in force in the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh and Namsai, Mahadevpur and Chaukham Police Stations in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh bordering the state of Assam.
