Health: World Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated every year on 10 September. Its purpose is to make people aware of a serious social and mental health problem like suicide and to promote collective efforts at the global level to prevent it.
This day was started in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Every year a new 'theme' is decided on this day, through which the causes of suicide, preventive measures and the importance of mental health services are emphasized.
The triennial theme (2024-2026) of World Suicide Prevention Day to be celebrated on 10 September 2025 this year is - "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" meaning "Change the narrative, save lives"
According to statistics, every year more than 7 lakh people around the world lose their lives by committing suicide. It is one of the leading causes of death among youth in the age group of 15 to 29 years.
To prevent suicide, it is important that an environment of openness and sensitivity is created in the society regarding mental health. Timely counseling, emotional support, medical treatment and support of family and community can help any person to come out of this difficulty.
