Ranchi, September 9: Eight Jal Sahiyas from Jharkhand were honoured for their outstanding contribution towards ensuring regular and safe drinking water supply in rural areas under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
At a programme held at Nepal House, Abu Imran, Secretary, Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, presented the Jal Sahiyas with special certificates of appreciation, mementos and angavastrams. He appreciated their work and encouraged other Jal Sahiyas across the state to follow their example.
The awardees include five Jal Sahiyas from Bokaro district and three from Ranchi district. They have played an important role in improving the operation and maintenance of water supply schemes in their respective villages and panchayats by actively coordinating with Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs).
The Jal Sahiyas have also contributed significantly to identifying and reporting problems in water supply systems, promoting safe drinking water practices, conserving water and creating awareness among rural communities about the safe and judicious use of water.
They are also playing an important role in making rural families aware of the importance of paying monthly user charges and coordinating with VWSCs. The money collected through water charges is used for the salaries of plumbers and pump operators, repairs and the operation and maintenance of drinking water supply schemes.
The Jal Jeevan Mission aims not only to provide tap water connections to rural households but also to ensure regular, adequate, safe and sustainable water services.
During the programme, the honoured Jal Sahiyas also shared their experiences and challenges. The recognition is aimed at acknowledging and encouraging their grassroots contribution and inspiring other Jal Sahiyas and rural communities to ensure the sustainable operation of water supply schemes and maintain the quality of water services.
