Indian Army Departs for 15th India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise ‘Maitree 2026’
New Delhi: The Indian Army contingent has departed for Thailand to participate in the 15th edition of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise ‘Maitree 2026’, aimed at strengthening military cooperation and enhancing operational coordination between the two countries.
The exercise is being conducted from 18 to 31 August 2026 at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. The previous edition was held in September 2025 at Umroi, Meghalaya.
Both the Indian Army and Royal Thai Army are participating with contingents of 85 personnel each. The Indian contingent primarily comprises soldiers from the 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army contingent includes personnel from the 3rd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division.
The exercise will feature company-level joint training focused on operations in jungle and semi-urban environments. The training is designed to enhance the capabilities of both armies to conduct joint operations against insurgency and terrorism under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
The exercise will include field training, combat-related discussions, lectures, demonstrations and a final validation exercise. The participating troops will also exchange operational experiences and showcase modern equipment and technologies used during joint operations.
Launched in 2006, Exercise Maitree has emerged as an important platform for strengthening military cooperation between India and Thailand and promoting the exchange of best practices. The exercise further enhances interoperability, mutual understanding and goodwill between the two armed forces, contributing to stronger long-term bilateral relations between the two countries.
