CMPDIL Signs MoU with Duke University, USA for Critical Minerals and Sustainable Development

Ranchi, August 11, 2026: Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Duke University, USA, to collaborate in the fields of critical minerals and sustainable development.

The five-year agreement aims to address emerging challenges in the mining and energy sectors through scientific research, technical expertise and knowledge exchange.

Under the partnership, Duke University will contribute expertise in advanced scientific research, mineral characterization, methodology development and process optimization. CMPDIL will support field operations, sample collection, technical data and institutional coordination in India.

A key focus will be assessing and exploring the recovery of critical minerals from secondary resources associated with coal and mining, including overburden, coal rejects, fly ash and acid mine drainage. Research will cover the characterization and potential recovery of critical minerals such as Rare Earth Elements (REEs), lithium and graphite.

The MoU also covers cooperation in low- and zero-carbon energy technologies, decarbonization pathways, sustainable energy systems, mine repurposing and post-mining land use. Collaboration is also envisaged in methane monitoring and mitigation, emission reduction, and assessment of carbon credits linked to coal mining activities and abandoned mines.
