Initiative for Relief in Ration Card Verification: Mayor Roshni Khalkho Seeks Opportunity for Beneficiaries to Voluntarily Delete Names

Ranchi: Under the 'Rightful Targeting' campaign initiated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, ineligible beneficiaries are being identified based on various criteria. Consequently, the Department of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Government of Jharkhand, has instructed all districts to delete the names of ineligible beneficiaries or cancel their ration cards following verification.

In compliance with these instructions, the District Supply Office, Ranchi, has issued notices to such beneficiaries, requiring them to either deposit a financial penalty, surrender their ration cards, or present their case. This has created an atmosphere of confusion and anxiety among many citizens.

Mindful of the difficulties faced by the general public, Ranchi Mayor Roshni Khalkho has written to the Deputy Commissioner and the District Rationing Officer of Ranchi, urging them to provide relief to ineligible beneficiaries. She has requested that beneficiaries who do not meet the eligibility criteria for holding a ration card be given an opportunity to voluntarily surrender their cards or have their names removed within a specified timeframe.

In her appeal, the Mayor noted that beneficiaries in other districts of Jharkhand have already been granted the opportunity to voluntarily surrender their ration cards or have their names deleted. She argued that a similar system should be implemented in Ranchi district so that ordinary citizens are spared from facing unnecessary financial penalties and administrative action.

The Mayor maintains that providing an opportunity for voluntary rectification would ensure transparency regarding eligible and ineligible beneficiaries while offering relief to the general public.
