Mumbai, October 24, 2026: Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has appealed to young people to become ambassadors of a drug-free India and spread awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse. He said that tackling the drug problem requires not only stopping the supply of narcotics but also reducing demand through awareness, prevention, rehabilitation and support for people struggling with addiction. He was speaking at the inauguration of a national motorcycle rally organised on the occasion of National Unity Day, marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, at Nariman Point in Mumbai. The Governor flagged off the rally, which departed for Gujarat.

The Governor said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a historic role in integrating princely states into the Indian Union and laying the foundation for a strong and united India. He stressed the need to remain vigilant in protecting national unity. He also praised the Maharashtra Police for its dedication, professionalism and contribution to maintaining law and order. Highlighting the police force's role in controlling Naxalite activities in Gadchiroli, he said the region was emerging as an important steel hub with new development opportunities.

Governor Varma emphasised that controlling drug trafficking must go hand in hand with efforts to reduce drug demand. He said police and anti-narcotics agencies must take strict action against traffickers and dealers, while society must work together to prevent substance abuse. He also highlighted the Drug-Free India Campaign in colleges and universities, where students are being encouraged to stay away from narcotic substances.

The programme was attended by Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Mayor Ritu Tawde, Director General of Police Sadanand Date, Police Commissioner Deven Bharti and other senior officials. Police personnel from various states and Union Territories are participating in the motorcycle rally, which aims to spread the message of national unity and a drug-free India. The rally will culminate at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat.
