Preparing to Crush Protests Under the Pretext of Permission? Pratul Shahdeo Targets Jharkhand Government
Ranchi, August 24: BJP State Chief Spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo has strongly criticised the Jharkhand government over the requirement of prior permission for protests, rallies and public meetings, alleging that such restrictions could be used to suppress democratic dissent.
Addressing a press briefing at the BJP office, Shahdeo said that peaceful protest and the right to express disagreement are essential components of a democracy. He questioned whether citizens in Jharkhand would now need government permission simply to raise their voice or participate in a peaceful movement.
Referring to Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(b) of the Constitution, Shahdeo said citizens are guaranteed freedom of speech and the right to assemble peacefully. He said maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the government, but it cannot be used as a pretext to silence the Opposition, students or ordinary citizens.
Shahdeo also questioned reports regarding police verification linked to social media activities. He demanded that the government clarify whether such measures are genuinely aimed at maintaining law and order or are intended to control dissent.
Questions Raised Over Government’s JPSC Defence
The BJP leader also questioned the state government’s handling of the JPSC matter before the High Court. He claimed that the Advocate General had been provided an advance copy of the case, yet a junior advocate represented the government during the initial hearing.
Shahdeo questioned why senior advocates were not entrusted with the matter when the government had prior information about the case. He said students appearing in the JPSC-related matter are seeking clear answers from the state government.
