Accused in Kolkata minor rape-murder case dies in police encounter; police claim he tried to escape during crime scene reconstruction
A major development has emerged in the case involving the rape and murder of a minor girl in Suryapur, under the Baruipur police station area in Kolkata's southern suburbs. The accused, Prabhas Mandal, died in a police encounter.
According to reports, the victim's family had identified the accused based on CCTV footage. The minor's body was recovered from a local pond on July 5, following which the police had launched an investigation.
Police stated that late Tuesday night, the accused was taken to the scene of the crime for a reconstruction of the incident. During this process, he allegedly snatched a police officer's service revolver and attempted to flee.
In retaliatory action, the police opened fire, injuring the accused. He was taken to Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police are proceeding with further action in the matter.
