📍 Ranchi | May 06, 2026

Taking *suo motu* cognizance of the alleged beating of former JLKM candidate Tarun Mahto while in police custody, the Jharkhand High Court has sought an action-taken report from the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Seraikela-Kharsawan regarding the installation of CCTV cameras in all police stations. The Court observed that a surveillance mechanism is essential to prevent incidents occurring within custody.

The Court has also sought a response from the Principal Secretary of the Health Department regarding the action taken against the medical officer who issued the "Fit for Custody" certificate. Both officials have been directed to file their responses by June 18.

The State Government informed the Court that a compensation of ₹1.50 lakh has been provided to Tarun Mahto as interim relief.
