India and Seychelles Strengthen Cooperation in Fisheries and Blue Economy
New Delhi, August 26, 2026: India and Seychelles have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture, scientific research and the sustainable use of marine resources.
A high-level bilateral meeting was held on August 25 between India’s Department of Fisheries and a delegation from Seychelles. The Seychelles delegation was led by Wallace Cosgro, Minister for Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy, while the Indian delegation was headed by Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed existing cooperation and explored new areas of partnership, including marine aquaculture, modern hatcheries, tuna fishing techniques, fish-stock assessment, post-harvest technology and marine conservation.
India highlighted that its fish production has reached a record 19.7 million tonnes, while seafood exports stood at 8.46 billion dollars. The Indian side also shared initiatives related to sustainable fisheries management, responsible fishing practices and technology-based infrastructure development.
The two countries discussed the use of Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies in fisheries, including data systems, monitoring, control and surveillance, as well as post-harvest management.
Seychelles expressed strong interest in advancing cooperation through a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, particularly in fisheries and aquaculture.
Both sides also agreed to promote joint scientific research, technical exchanges, expert visits, institutional training and pilot projects.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with India and Seychelles reaffirming their commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation and sustainable marine development.
